Huntington – Huntington was once a large coal town, but is now known as more of a college town thanks to Marshall University. Collis P. Huntington founded the city in 1870. Charleston – Charleston is the capital city of West Virginia. It is also the childhood home of Alias star Jennifer Garner. Charleston is currently renovating the capital building and working on the gold leafing on its dome. Morgantown – Morgantown is located on the banks of the Monongahela River. The city has its own personal rapid transit system, which helps transport students attending West Virginia University. Parkersburg – Parkersburg was originally named Newport in the 1700’s, but changed its name in 1810. The city is home to Ohio Valley College and has a population of around 33,100. Beckley – The current mayor of Beckley is Emmett S. Pugh, III. The city was named after the first clerk of the House of Representatives, John J. Beckley. Beckley is less than one percent Hispanic or Latino. Point Pleasant – Point Pleasant is the basis for the book and film The Mothman Prophecies, when a bridge collapsed and killed several people in 1967 and many claimed to have seen a large moth-like figure. Point Pleasant has a population of less than 5,000. Wheeling – Wheeling was originally the capital city of West Virginia before Charleston. It is the site of the Wheeling Convention, where the state was split off from Virginia and established in 1861. Weirton – Weirton’s main industry is steel, and is home to ISG Weirton, Inc., the country’s second largest tin producer. A man who built a steel mill there founded Weirton in the late 1700’s. Keyser – Keyser is the home of Potomac State College. The city has an important railroad running through it, and the city has changed hands about 14 times over the last two centuries because of the desire to keep the railroad there. Braxton – The city of Braxton is named for Carter Braxton, who was one of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence.
