Topeka – Topeka is the capital of Kansas. Three different Navy ships have been named after the city. It is also the location of where Wyatt Earp served as an officer in the 1800’s. Dodge City was also the name of a 1939 western film. Overland Park – Overland Park, Kansas has a huge 300-acre botanical garden and arboretum. Its major employer is Sprint, whose world headquarters are located there. Overland Park is home to Baker University. Emporia – Emporia has a large meat killing and packing plant owned by Tyson foods. Another of its large employers is the Dolly Madison Bakery Company. Emporia has a population of approximately 27,000 people. Salina – Salina can be recognized easily bys its large grain elevators. The city’s main product is grain. However, Tony’s Pizza is Salina’s largest employer. The city was founded in 1856 and currently has a population of about 50,000. Kansas City – Kansas City share its metropolis area with another state, Missouri. Missouri also has a city named Kansas City. The city is located on both the Missouri and Kansas rivers, and has a population of about 150,000. Lawrence – Lawrence, Kansas is home to the University of Kansas, which was established in 1866 by the citizens of the city. The downtown area is filled with exciting cultural activities. Lawrence is home to such famous writers as Langston Hughes and William S. Borroughs. Manhattan – Although it shares the same name as its New York counterpart, Manhattan, Kansas is nowhere near as large, therefore earning it the nickname “the little apple”.
