The Caribbean is also known as the West Indies, and is a group of islands and countries that are either in or border on the Caribbean Sea. Most of the islands are located near Mexico and Venezuela. There are at least 7,000 islands that can be considered part of the Caribbean. The name Caribbean comes from the Caribs which were a group of Indians living in the region when the Europeans discovered some of the islands. Many people also associate the Caribbean with its pirates, which have inhabited the waters surrounding the islands for centuries. Some of the larger Caribbean groupings include the US Virgin Islands, Belize, Costa Rica, Honduras, and the Bahamas. Many of the islands are extremely popular tourist hot spots, and are a leading choice for summer and winter vacations. Some activities that are very popular on or around the Caribbean islands include deep sea diving, snorkeling, swimming, and fishing. Many people claim that the food on most Caribbean islands is next to none, mostly because of the spices that are used. A spice called “jerk” is extremely well known, and is used in cooking all over the world.

Many wonderful fruits can be found on the Caribbean islands, such as coconut and pineapple. Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean. Many of these islands were formed by volcanoes, and several still host active volcanoes today. In addition, there are very precious resources on a lot of the islands including lush rainforests and rare species of plants, birds, and mammals as well as fish. The Caribbean islands can be especially susceptible to hurricanes during hurricane season, and are prone to flooding and disaster during those months. The weather on most of the islands is temperate, with warm temperatures dominating most of the year, and fairly heavy rainfall.
